Community Governance for You
VOX, Voluntary Action Wakefield District and the Council's Cohesion Team held an event in March around 'Community Governance for You'.
The event at Lightwaves Leisure Centre was organised for the District's Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in order for them to find out more about citizen and community governance roles such as becoming a magistrate, school governor, councillor, getting involved on Wakefield and District Housing's Board or Local Management Committees, the Independent Monitoring Board for Prisons and South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust's Members Council.
Councillor Olivia Rowley opened the event where Dr Mohammed Abdul Bari, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, gave a speech on a positive way forward for an inclusive Muslim community in Great Britain. He also launched the new VOX Guide on Citizen Governance. We are pleased to report that follow up work has been arranged through VOX with youth groups including Sport 4U, Next Generation and Sahara to engage young people from the BME communities and increase their understanding and involvement in their communities.
VOX would like to thank all those who made a positive contribution to the day, which has offered up many new ways to engage and involve people from our BME communities in the District.
