Healthier Communities Fund helps children get active with Thai Boxing

Children from Ackworth Mill Dam Junior & Infant School are getting lessons in Thai Boxing in a bid to get more active by S.E.S.K.U. Muay Thai & Boxing Academy.

S.E.S.K.U. works with young children and their families to help the youngsters achieve a healthy weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. Along with Thai Boxing the children learn the importance of eating healthily, increase their physical fitness levels, have an improved knowledge of diet and nutrition and discover how small changes in their eating habits can make a significant difference.

Along with Mill Dam Junior & Infant School S.E.S.K.U currently run 14 courses across the district with a team of 3 trainers and 1 coordinator.

They are able to help children stay active thanks to funding they received from the £1 million Wakefield Healthier Communities Fund. The first fund of its kind in the District, it awarded grants to successful applicants from local community and voluntary sectors that are helping to tackle specific health issues.

NHS Wakefield District provided £1 million for the fund and work in partnership with VOX Community Empowerment Network and Voluntary Action Wakefield District (VAWD) to develop and manage the fund.

Grants from £10,000 to £100,000 were awarded to groups who provided good quality plans tackling the following two issues:

- helping people with long term conditions to remain independent without hospital intervention

- preventing and managing childhood obesity

Neighbourhood Network Meeting Dates

VOX Neighbourhood Network Meetings are to bring together voluntary and community groups with statutory organisations in specific parts of the district. Supported by the VOX Community Engagement Team these networks are there to enable communities to have a greater say in what happens in their area, identifying and tackling local issues as well as giving an opportunity to share information.

24th June, Ryhill, Havercroft and South Hiendley, 7pm until 8.30pm, St. Pauls Methodist Church, Ryhill

27th June, Hemsworth and District Partnership, 10.30am until 12noon, Cedar Business Centre

30th June, Eastmoor and College Grove, 1pm until 2.30pm, Lightwaves Leisure Centre
